At the end of the 2001 war in Afghanistan the country’s infrastructure had all been but destroyed. For those companies wanting to take advantage of the lack of internet they found they were faced with a country where the nation’s network of telephone lines was left barely functioning. In the capital city of Kabul, with a population of almost 2 million, there were only 12 000 telephone lines. Internet service providers in Afghanistan have had to invest heavily over the years to try and get the country’s communication system and infrastructure back up and running and to a standard that could reliably handle internet services.
