IP telephony (Internet Protocol telephony) is a general phrase used to describe technologies that use the Internet Protocol’s packet-switched connections to exchange communications such as voice communications or fax communications. Calls travel as packets of data on shared lines using the internet.
IP telephony is an important part of the unification of computers, telephones, and television into a single integrated information environment. For this reason it is often referred to as Converged communication.
